PHILOSOPHY – Violence: Changing the Genetic Blueprint

Throughout the long history of humankind, violence has always been something inherent; there can be no doubt about this.  If we had to overcome the surge of violence among human beings, it would be a great problem, because the presence of this defect is something common in all species, be it rational or irrational.  Without a doubt this stigma has been transmitted in phylogenetic manner.  In this sense, our innate capacity to make use of the violence is of course an evolutionary element of great significance.   Was our brain designed for violence?  It seems that the answer is yes, that we are by nature violent, with the instincts of survival against the backdrop of hostile surroundings, much in the same way that all animals are aggressive.  The great difference is that while they are aggressive, their conflicts usually do not lead to deaths; on the other hand, human beings seem to enjoy the act of killing.
An example can be seen in the fight between two wolves.  At the moment when the outcome of the combat has been confirmed, and one arises victorious, this wolf will urinate on his subdued foe; at the same time the vanquished will leave its jugular exposed as a sign of submission.  And at that point the fight stops.   What great contrast when we compare that to the case of us humans!  From the first instance when a human being raised a stone to throw or to strike his opponent, the use of weaponry to defend and attack has spiraled out of control and as a result it has evolved into a long chain of massacres on this planet.  To some cynics, this is the price we pay for Evolution.
In the 5th century, St Augustine, the most important Theologian of Christianity, wrote following in his great work City of God, “The Creator is not responsible for the evil that exists, but it is Man that is responsible, since God is the author of the human qualities and not of the vices.  He created the righteous man, but man became corrupt by his own will.”  I am not in agreement with St Augustine.  Violence and evil had already been inoculated in the minds of humankind.  And part of the blame would fall on the Creator.  This is valid in both cases, if we were the product of Creation or Evolution.
Violence has been and is a sign of our identity.  As always, we are the only ones who can change the situation.  Without waiting for miracles in the future, we should at least try to shake off violence from our genetic blueprint.  Let us all evolve towards concord, because if we do not even try, it would be preferable that a meteorite wipe us from the face of this Earth.
